Hawkins DNA project: Family Finder Participants

Because the Family Finder test results are so hard to interpret for all of us, I am placing here a list of those participants who have taken the Family Finder test (you are welcome to have me add your if you have tested at any of the big five sites: Ancestry, FTDNA, MyHeritage, 23andMe, or Living DNA. Even if you haven't identified which matches are Hawkins matches if believe that you have Hawkins Ancestry you are welcome. Please contact me and I will be happy to add you to the list. If you know from reading the blog or visiting the Hawkins DNA website which family group you belong to, I'll place your name in the correct family. It will take me a long time to bring this up to date. I will chip away. Please e-mail me at mosesm@earthlink.net to add you to the list. I will need your name, the name that everyone can use to find you and the site at which your results are posted.

I hope that this blog will be a place for researchers who have interest in the Hawkins surname can chat and present thoughts about the particular line of Hawkins families that they look at.

I think that you will find Phil’s site more organized and easier to navigate than a blog tends to be. However, use the search box on this blog to zero in on posts that are about your DNA group. I will try to label each post with the DNA group that is being discussed unless I think that it is a post that is relevant to everyone.

This blog is not meant to replace Phil's site. This blog is more like Phil's more informal newsletter where you are invited to chat about ideas you have about your Hawkins research regardless of which DNA group you match.

I also encourage you to read the archived messages on the Hawkins mail list. Better yet, you may want to subscribe if you are not already a subscriber. The Hawkins mail list is a rootsweb mail list and has the advantage that many people read the posts and that all of the posts are archived and are fully searchable. I personally have made contact with many people who have given me a great deal of help with my own Hawkins line through that mail list. I do not mean for the blog to replace the mail list either. Instead I mean for this blog to enhance the mail list as I can place photos and maps and illustrations on the blog that give more meaning to the mail list posts. Rootweb mail lists can not accept photos, maps nor illustrations.

Please send me anything that you would want to share with the world about your own Hawkins DNA group. This can include your research that you would want to share. It can include questions that you would want to ask. I will work on this little by little for the next year. Please be patient. I am just like you. I have limited time. I have great interest, but my non-genealogical life limits what I can accomplish. If we find that this format is not helpful, we'll try something else.

I welcome your input! I welcome your criticism! I welcome any editing that you can do for me! Send me your ideas, and we'll work on them together! Many of you are already my good buddies. I look forward to your help in continuing the hard work that Phil has done so far.

George Winston Hawkins gedmatch number M227690. our Hawkins family has its roots in Hovingham, Yorkshire North Riding, later Errol Scotland. So far as I know, the only branch that still has the Hawkins name is in New Zealand. Hawkins descendants in the United States and Canada are of the Pirie, Norwell and Cameron families. I would be interested to know if there are any other descendants here from anyYorkshire Hawkins families.

My brother and I have both been tested along with my mother My bro and I on FTDNA an mom and I on Ancestry.. Her grandmother Virginia Hawkins CATRON Butner, per family history was adopted by them when her family was wiped out in an epidemic. She is in the the household of George Frederick (Kettering) Catron in 1860 census as 2 years old and she was born 10 July 1858 in Mt Airy Virginia. She is buried in in Rural Retreat Virginia. He 'adopted" family also had loss. Her mother Anna Maria Polly Etter , and 6 siblings and brother in law Wm.Lindsey all died in a 3 month period as well. We have not matched as far as we know ANY Catron's. I havce been researching for 13 years and never was able to discover if she is a blood Catron or Hawkins(?) I am hoping we can join this project. thanks Lesli Wall

Not Sure what family I group I am my Gedmatch kit number is A831896. My grandfather was Edward Raymond Hawkins b. 1932-2008 Philadelphia His father was Alfred W Hawkins III 1905-1970 Philadelphia (wife Vivian Tritch) his father was born is Canada (wife Eleanor Smith) is 1864, and his father was born in England (wife Mary Adelaide Clark). Any help would be greatly appreciated.

My cousin just had his yDNA submitted and we're in Hawkins Group 5. The farthest back ancestor I know for sure is Aaron Hawkins born 1793 at Glen Burnie, MD. We're descended from his son, William Louis Hawkins born 1820 in Glen Burnie. Family is still in Anne Arundel County. The farm land on which Aaron and William were born was purchased in 1753 by another Aaron Hawkins with a Joseph Hawkins and Thomas Wright. The three of them divided 600 acres. Is anyone else in this family line? Would love to hear from you.

My name is Andrea Sexton. My gad match number is dr6297771 . My great grandmother was Ruth Vance. Her mother was Arabella Hawkins (1877-1911) and lived in LeClede Missouri. Arabella died in child birth so my great grandmother did not know her or the Hawkins Family. I am working on a tree for my mother and would love to know more about the Hawkins. My family tree lists John H Hawkins, b:1858, d:1900,. Married to: Martha Reed, b: 1855, d: 1940. Don't know if this helps anyone, but they had a daughter (my great grandmother) Eunice Hawkins, b: 1898, d: 1971.
